Connecting Legacy Instruments to Modern Laboratory Informatics
Full instrument fleet replacement is rarely realistic — or necessary. The more common challenge laboratories face is connecting a mixed estate of legacy and modern instrumentation to a single, modern informatics layer.
Middleware plays a critical role here. Rather than requiring every instrument to speak the same protocol, a well-designed middleware layer can normalise data from serial, file-based, OPC UA, and REST API sources into a consistent format for downstream LIMS, ELN, or SDMS platforms.
The projects that succeed are the ones that map instrument-by-instrument connectivity requirements before selecting an integration approach — because a chromatography data system with API access needs a very different strategy to a twenty-year-old balance with only a serial port.
